Battlelords TCG FAQ v1.0 (9/1/1995)
MISCELLANEOUS
How many total cards in the set?
There are 331 cards in the set, plus 4 chase cards. One Battlelord (Eridam) appears in two versions, one with two skills, one with four skills. This will be fixed in the next run.
Is there a chase card in every box of Reinforcement Packs?
No. The ratio of distribution of the chase cards is 1:35 packs. Some boxes may have none while others may have two.
Are there any mistakes in the artist credits?
Guard Duty is attributed to Doug Shuler but is truly L.A. Williams. Cyber rejection is not C. Brent Ferguson but Adam Mazy. False Lead is Quinton Hoover, not William O'Connor. Mutzachan Proton Controller has two versions, Quinton Hoover and Adam Mazy, Quinton Hoover is correct. The Granny card is missing Dave Johnson’s credits. And we misspelled William O’Connor’s name (O'Conner) on most of his cards. We will fix all these errors in the next printing. Our apologies to the artists.
How do you tell what is a Fortune card and what is a Fame card? The backs are all the same, right?
The front of the cards have a distinct look to them. All of the Fortune cards have the name of the card running horizontally across the top. Battlelord cards, which look like ID cards, are also Fortune cards. The Fame cards have the name of the card running along the left side of the card.
Any expansions planned for Battlelords?
Yes, we're planning to release Genesis about November '95, and then you'll see Arachnids in early '96. A yet to be titled expansion will be released in spring '96.
What will be the difference between Limited Edition and future printing?
All future printings will be marked with a symbol to designate which printing it was. Only the limited edition will contain no symbol.
How close does the Battlelords collectible card game follow the Battlelords role-playing game?
Battlelords the collectible card game uses background information and the universe from the RPG. You may notice a few changes where we used some creative license, but most things follow the RPG exactly. We also actually introduced a few new things that may make their way into the role-playing game.
RULES
Why can't my Controller use MBA or Kodiak armor?
Heavy armor interferes with a Controller's ability to generate. If a Controller is equipped with armor that cannot be used by Controllers, that Controller loses all generation ability until the armor is reassigned.
Why can't I play more than one of each Operation?
The Operation advantages are powerful. Allowing more than one of each type destroys game balance. The Internal Security Operation is the exception. The card should have explained that more than one Internal Security Operation may be purchased and assigned. Thus, Internal Security is subject only to the normal three card limit.
The example of play in the Rules of Warfare discusses redrawing your first Fame hand if you get no Hotspots, but I don't see that in the rules.
In the first Draw Phase, the rules should have detailed that if you draw no Hotspots, discard the whole hand and redraw five new Fame cards. Continue to discard and redraw until you have at least one Hotspot card in your hand.
It's time to draw for Initiative and I have no Fortune cards left?
When there are no Fortune cards left to draw then use your Fame point total as your initiative. If there is a tie for first and you can't draw cards to break the tie, then flip a coin, or roll a die.
The Rules of Warfare appear contradictory in places. What's the deal?
The Rules of Warfare actually present the rules to two games: Basic Battlelords and the full game. Basic Battlelords is a simplified version of the Battlelords game. It's perfect for new players and may be played with two Command decks. The first few pages of the Rules of Warfare cover basic terms applicable to both games. The next few pages cover Basic Battlelords. These rules differ in several respects from the full game rules. The remainder of the Rules of Warfare apply to the full customized game.
FAME CARDS – BATTLE CARDS
When do you use the Dodge Battle Card?
The Dodge card is mistyped to be played in the Dodge Combat. It should read Melee instead of Dodge.
The Desperate Evasion Battle Card says it gives +2 Defense, -1 Evasion. What does that mean?
It should read +2 Defense, -1 Melee.
What if I play Kamikaze, and my opponent plays Critical Hit?
Your PUD dies, you gain +5, and your opponent gains Fame Points equal to your PUD's cost.
When do the Critical Hit Battle Card, the Pain Matrix, and other cards which cause a PUD to be discarded take effect?
All combat is simultaneous. All cards are chosen, all Matrices are specified, all cards are flipped face-up, all calculations are made, and then damage is inflicted. You do not have to discard your PUD before combat sums are totaled.
If I play a Kamikaze or Decoy Battle Card, and my opponent also inflicts a killing blow, does my next PUD die?
No. If your opponent inflicts a killing blow, he or she gets Fame Points as usual. If your opponent fails to inflict a killing blow, your PUD is still discarded, but no Fame is awarded.
What if I play Draw, and my opponent plays Critical Hit?
Draw always ends combat as if no killing blows were dealt. No Battlelords or PUDs die.
FAME CARDS - MATRIX
Can a Battlelord or PUD not involved in combat generate a matrix to help another squad that is in combat?
No. Only personnel in combat may use matrices in that combat. The only current exception is Reincarnate, for obvious reasons. Mission Cards
Some Mission Cards have a payoff of +1 Leadership. What is that?
Those cards should be read +1 Command.
Personal Vendetta and Strike Team Omega Mission Cards have no text in the payoff box?
This is intentional. The principal payoff these missions generate is the satisfaction of killing your opponent. You get Fame Points for killing your opponent's Battlelord and PUDs, and you get 5 Reputation Points for completing the mission.
What does it mean when a primary or secondary goal of a Mission Card reads "Security 4,5,6" or some other numbers?
This should have read Sector Rating. The Mission Cards are intended to be targeted at a Hotspot with one of those Sector Rating numbers.
The Anti-Aeodronian Sorte Mission Card lists Kermadec as the primary goal. The Hotspot with a name close to that is Keremadec. Should they be the same?
Yes, both the Mission and the Hotspot should read Kermadec.
FAME CARDS – WILD EVENTS
If I play Credit Card during the Revenue Phase and you use Hand of Fate to cancel it, can I play another Credit Card?
No. Credit Card states that only one may be played per turn.
What happens to my squad when a scrub mission wild event has been played in it?
They are left in limbo, they are neither on a Defense Mission nor on the mission they where attempting.
What happens to a piece of equipment that I steal using the Theft Wild Event if I have no Battlelords in my Command Display?
The Equipment Card is discarded immediately.
If my opponent kills my Battlelord with a Suicide Bomb Wild Event card, who gets Fame Points?
Your opponent gets none, unless his or her squad killed some of your PUDs before the Battlelord used the Suicide Bomb. You get Fame Points equal to the cost of any PUDs, and the Battlelord that your (now departed) squad killed.
The Maelstrom General and the Plasmoid Devourer Wild Events kill PUDs in any squad. Can these cards be played on squads with fewer or no PUDs (Battlelords only)?
Yes. If there are no PUDs to kill, that portion of the monster's effect is ignored. However many PUDs exist up to the card's limit, are killed. The targeted squad is also frozen and may not perform any missions this turn, as the Battlelord is busy fleeing from these enormous other-dimensional creatures.
The Tactics Shift Wild Event cards says it must be played in a Non-mission Phase, but it’s only useful in the Mission Phase. What gives?
The center of the Tactics Shift card should read Mission Phase.
How does the Price Went Up Wild Event work?
Starting with the Lead Commander, each Commander conducts his or her purchases in turn. As the active Commander declares purchases, opponents may play Price Went Up. The last purchase declared before the Wild Event is played goes up in price. If the active Commander still wants to buy it, he or she pays more. If the active Commander still wants to buy it, he or she pays more. If the active Commander decides the card is too expensive, it is discarded, and the Credits may be allocated elsewhere.
Can Price Went Up be used on a Battlefield Promotion?
Yes. Battlefield Promotion is used in the Purchase Phase, when Price Went Up is used. Price Went Up may be used on any card "purchased" by an opponent and the cost (Credits or Fame Points) of that card is raised by 5.
What happens to the Loan/Line of Credit Wild Event Card after I collect my credits?
These cards are played under the Financier/Loan Shark Operations and they remain there.
What is the penalty for failing to pay the Financier/Loan Shark Operation's fee?
Those operations should read, "This card is eliminated if the fee is not paid." Any Lines of Credit or Loans that have been played on the Financier/Loan Shark are also eliminated.
I played a Line of Credit on my Loan shark, I've collected my credits now can I play a Hand of Fate card to remove the Line of Credit (and the Fee it charges)?
Yes, this is one of the more devious card plays available.
When do I play the Weapons Sale Wild Event Card?
The card middle says Purchase Phase, and the text box reads Revenue Phase. The Weapons Sale is played in the Purchase Phase. This means that if you are the last to purchase assets, you can play the Weapons Sale and you are the only one who benefits from it.
Position Compromised Wild Event Card says it must be played in the Combat Phase? What is this?
The card should read Mission Phase.
FORTUNE CARDS - BATTLELORDS
Why are there two Jaquassarrious?
Jaquassarrious is the most wanted criminal in the universe, to protect himself he had himself cloned multiple times. Expect to see even more of him in Genesis.
I was about to kill Jaquassarrious with the "Discard a Battlelord" advantage and my friend used this advantage to discard me. Is this right?
This is an error. Neither Jaquassarrious (Discard Battlelord, Discard Hotspot) can use his advantage during the Mission Phase.
Can I keep buying my two Jaquassarrious cards and keep discarding my opponent's Battlelords and Hotspots?
No. Jaquassarrious's advantage may be used once. Both he and the cards he attacked are eliminated from the game.
If I discard Jaquassarrious to force the discard of my opponent, can he use the DFMS-401 to save the life of his Battlelord?
No. Jaquassarrious's is to eliminate, not deliver a killing blow.
I dealt a killing blow to Gronk's squad. Which of his two supporting PUDs is discarded?
Gronk's Commander has to organize his squad's PUDs before combat as usual. Then he can turn over the first two PUDs because of Gronk's advantage. The first PUD to be turned over is killed. Any game effect that would affect a Supporting PUD will always effect the first PUD. If the combat calls for a second PUD to die, then the second PUD is discarded.
Why would anyone put Black Widow in his or her deck? She is expensive and weak.
Black Widow is a capable and dangerous Battlelord. Her scores should read: Melee 4, Ranged 4, Defense 5, Command 5.
FORTUNE CARS - EQUIPMENT
Dermal Armor, Todek and other cards allow you to ignore the first killing blow? Does this make cards invulnerable?
No. The first killing blow of the whole Skirmish is ignored, not the first killing blow of each Skirmish round. Once a killing blow is inflicted, all killing blows delivered in the remainder of the combat round count.
Can I use the HUD-A Scan Unit every phase?
No, the HUD-A Scan Unit has to recharge after every use. It may be used once per turn. Also, if someone steals the Unit after you use it, they have to wait until the next turn to use it.
What happens to the equipment on my Battlelord when she is killed or discarded?
Whenever a Battlelord is killed or discarded, all the equipment assigned to her is also discarded. She loses any equipment on her even if she was discarded during the organization phase.
FORTUNE CARDS - OPERATIONS
What happens to my Internal Security Operation if the Hotspot which it is assigned is deactivated?
The Operation is discarded.
