BASIC BATTLELORDS
Getting Started
Once you have unwrapped your Command deck and glanced over your beautiful new cards, you are ready to begin. We recommend a couple of Basic Battlelords Games to start. Basic Battlelords may be played with as little as one Command Deck and is easy to learn.
Look over the card graphics in this rule book to familiarize yourself with the various components of the cards. Separate your Fame and Fortune cards into two stacks, shuffle both stacks separately and place them in draw piles. Start with 15 Fame Points.
Basic Order of Batle
A single game Turn is composed of the following phases. Each phase is completed by all Commanders before moving to the next phase. In the first Turn, skip all but the Draw, Hotspot, and Discard Phases. If you draw no Hotspots on the first Turn, discard and redraw the whole hand until you get a Hotspot.
I. Draw Phase
Draw your Fame hand up to five cards. If the draw pile runs out, reshuffle the discard pile and create a new draw pile.
II. Revenue Phase
Collect one Credit for each Hotspot and three Credits for each Operation active in your Command Display.
III. Initiative Phase
Draw one Fortune card. The Commander who draws the card with the highest cost becomes the Lead Commander. Ties are redrawn until broken. All cards drawn are discarded.
IV. Purchase Phase
Draw five cards from the Fortune draw pile. If the Fortune draw pile runs out, reshuffle the discard pile and create a new draw pile. Purchase cards as desired by spending Credits accumulated during the Revenue Phase (or by converting Fame Points). Unspent Credits are converted into Fame Points, or lost.
V. Organization Phase
Organize your squads. No more than one Battlelord may be in one squad. The number of PUDs that may be grouped with a Battlelord may not exceed that Battlelord’s Command score. Up to 3 PUDs may be grouped without a Battlelord. Equipment may be assigned to any Battlelord. Matrices are not assigned; place them to one side of your Command Display.
VI. Assignment Phase
Assign a mission to each squad. Face Missions target an opponent’s Hotspot. Defense Missions defend your turf. Squads assigned Mission Cards must target an opponent’s Hotspot, Operation, or Squad, whichever meets the Primary or Secondary goal. Play starts with the Lead Commander and moves clockwise.
VII. Mission Phase
Attempt to complete missions. Play starts with the Lead Commander, and proceeds clockwise.
A. Skirmish Subphase
Announce whether Melee or Ranged combat will be fought. Your opponent chooses whether to defend with any Defense Mission squad. If a fight occurs, total the proper attack scores on your Battlelords and/or PUDs and compare that to the total of your opponent’s Defense scores. Your opponent does the same with his or her proper attack scores and your Defense scores. If the attack score is greater, one defending PUD dies (owner’s choice). If no PUDs remain, the Battlelord dies. Battle cards may be played at anytime in this subphase. Matrices may also be generated to affect combat by paying their Fame Point cost. Battle cards are discarded after being played. Matrices are not. Either side may retreat at the end of any round without penalty. If no one dies for three rounds, the skirmish is stalemated.
B. Aftermath Subphase
Regardless of the outcome, each side gains a number of Fame Points equal to the cost of each opposition Battlelord or PUD killed. If you defeat your opponent, deactivate the targeted Hotspot, and (1) collect two Fame Points for a Face Mission, or (2) collect the Fame Point payoff listed on your Mission Card for the Goal you have met only if one of your surviving Battlelords or PUDs from the squad on that mission has one of the skills listed on the Mission card. If your opponent defeats you, he or she collects two Fame Points. Stalemate grants each side one Fame Point. Choose another squad and return to the Skirmish Subphase.
VIII. Victory Phase
Total your Reputation Points. Each completed Mission Card equals ten Reputation Points. Each Fame Point equals one Reputation Point. If any Commander has over 30 Reputation Points, the Commander with the highest total wins.
VIII. Hotspot Phase
Activate any Hotspot for free. Reactivate any Hotspot at the cost of one Fame Point each.
VIII. Discard Phase
Discard any Fame cards you desire.
Special Basic Rules
Battlelords and Operation advantages are used, but some may be ineffective.
Any Controller can generate any Matrix of equal or lower level, regardless of type. Each active Controller may generate one Matrix per phase or subphase, except the Skirmish Subphase. Each Controller may generate one Matrix per Skirmish round.
If you have any other questions, consult the rules which follow. Note that the rules which follow are the advanced rules.
If they conflict with rules detailed above, the rules above govern.
Any card which requires another card to play may be played without that requirement. Any Line of Credit or Loan card
may only be played if you have at least one active Operation.
