THE FORTUNE DECK

Battlelords Cards

Battlelords are the major players in your organization. Battlelords lead troops, perform missions and grow in power as the game progresses.

Battlelords are unique individuals, you may not have more than one of each named Battlelord in your Command Display at one time. Moreover, each Battlelord may only be hired by one Commander. If a particular Battlelord becomes available for you to purchase or play, and that particular Battlelord is already placed in an opponent’s Command Display, your Battlelord card is discarded and cannot be purchased or played. Any Battlelord with the notation “Clones Exist” is exempt from the above rules.

  • Cost: The credits that must be expended to activate the Battlelord in your Command Display.
  • Racial Symbol: A Battlelord’s race is noted by this symbol. The racial symbols are listed on the inside back cover

of these rules.

  • Melee: The force of a Battlelord’s hand to hand combat or melee attack.
  • Ranged: The force of a Battlelord’s ranged weapon attack.
  • Defense: The Battlelord’s ability to withstand attack.
  • Command: This is the number of PUDs who will follow the Battlelord into battle.
  • Skills: Battlelords have one or more skills which may aid in the successful completion of a mission. Controller (see

Matrix Cards below) skills also have a level (from I to VI).

  • Advantage: Each Battlelord has a special power.
  • Affiliation: Battlelords are Neutral, Legit or Criminal.

Personnel Under Development (PUD) Cards

These Battlelord-wanna-bes serve a valuable function in your mercenary company. Mostly, they serve as cannon fodder. On the other hand, they are cheap and may get in a lucky shot some day. PUDs have no Command scores or advantages, may not use equipment and may not be assigned Mission Cards. PUDs do have costs, skills and other scores just as Battlelords do.

Operation Cards

Your mercenary company may engage in certain activities that enhance the revenue produced by Hotspots, or provide advantages that affect game play. These activities are represented by Operation Cards.

Some Operations list one or more Income Codes. The Operation generates one additional Credit for each Hotspot in your Command Display with a Sector Rating equal to one of the listed Income Codes. Inactive Hotspots do not generate additional revenue.

Operations are not tied to a specific Hotspot. An Operation may be played even if the Commander has no Hotspot with a matching Sector Rating.

Your affiliation affects which Operations you may use. A Legit Commander may not use any Operation marked “Criminal”. A Criminal Commander may not use any Operation marked “Legit”. Anyone may use a “Neutral” Operation.

You may place each allowable Operation in your Command Display only once. However, every Commander may play the same allowable Operation.

  • Cost: The credits that must be expended to activate the Operation in your Command Display.
  • Income: This lists the Sector Rating of those Hotspots which will produce more revenue.
  • Advantage: Some Operations have special abilities.
  • Affiliation: Operations are Neutral, Legit or Criminal.

Equipment Cards

Equipment may be purchased and allocated to any Battlelord. A Battlelord may always choose not to use a piece of equipment. In combat, such non-use must be declared in step 5 of the Skirmish Subphase.

Equipment use is limited by encumbrance, a Battlelord may only carry up to two Weapon cards, one Armor card, and five other non-Cybernetic Equipment cards.

A Battlelord may be fitted with unlimited cybernetics, as long as no piece of equipment is duplicated. Cybernetics disruptthe flow of energy by Controllers. Each piece of cybernetics played on a Controller decreases his or her Matrix skill level by one.

If a new piece of equipment is placed on a completely encumbered Battlelord, an old piece of equipment must be discarded.

  • Cost: The credits that must be expended to activate the Equipment card on your Battlelord.
  • Security Code: The strictness of Alliance Law regarding possession of such equipment. A Security Code of 1 means a relatively common, unregulated article. A Security Code of 9 means a highly lethal, highly monitored article.

Matrix Cards

Some Battlelords and PUDs have the ability to produce powerful magical effects. This is called “generating a matrix,” and such personnel are called “Controllers.” Specialized knowledge is necessary to generate a particular matrix. Matrix cards represent that knowledge. Once purchased, they are placed in front of the Commander to one side of the Command Display. Matrix cards are not specific to a particular Controller.

After placement, a matrix may be used by any active Controller in your Command Display who has the proper level and type of skill. A Battlelord Controller may generate one matrix once per phase, once per round of the Skirmish Subphase, and once during the Aftermath Subphase. A PUD Controller may generate one matrix once per round of the Skirmish Subphase. Each time a matrix is generated Fame Points must be expended as listed on the Matrix card.

There are four types of matrices, each with a corresponding skill: Empath, Energy, Heal, and Entropy. Each matrix and skill type has several levels from one(I) to eight(VIII).

Controllers may generate matrices of their own skill type, up to and including their own skill level. They may generate other types of matrices at two skill levels lower than their skill level.

Example: a level V Entropy skill Battlelord may generate up to level V Entropy matrices. That same Controller may only generate up to level III matrices from the Empath, Healer, Energy, or any other school.

Recall that cybernetics decreases a Controller’s matrix skill.

  • Cost: The credits that must be expended to activate the Matrix card on your Command Display.
  • Force: The Fame Points that must be expended each time the Matrix is generated.
