Casmem

"These melonheaded freaks of nature have been using the Alliance for their schemes long enough. The whole race is perverted, always claiming to protect us by not revealing any information. They try to succumb us by justifying their deeds with the everpresent excuse of necessarity in face of the Arachnid threat, but you know what? I think the Mutzachan are far more dangerous than the spiders - and far more sinister, too."
- Martina Heydn,
shortly before being executed for high treason and murder of 42 Mutzachans

Overview

The Casmem (for Coalition Against the Sinister Machinations of the Evil Mutzachans), also called the Merlinists, are a rather new movement that is slowly spreading throughout the galaxies.

Conspiracy theories concerning the Mutzachan are nothing new to the Alliance and are source of imagination for reporters and movie producers everywhere - much like the CIA conspiracies on Earth in the 20th and 21st Century. However, with the Dyson sphere nearing completion and a rising number of rumors linking the early experiments of Mutzachan Stargate travel to the existence of the Motaran Rift, hushed voices speaking of conspiracy have turned into a roar of anger and hatred.

The Casmem movement was originally founded in 2278 by a Human scientist named Dr. F. Bert, who some claim is no other than Uncle Ernie himself (drawing this connection by reference to an ancient earth children entertainment program). Perhaps the term "founded" is misplaced here, since there already existed various groups of Mutzachan-Haters on several worlds. Casmem started as an information network between these scattered groups, who slowly molded into one of the largest and most dangerous terrorist groups of today.

Within the ranks of the Merlinists one can find a lot of separatist humans who still disdain the Mutzachans for their involvement on Earth, claiming that the Mutzachans meddled in Earth problems that the Humans were very well capable of solving themselves (yeah, right). Other examples for members of the Merlinists would be Chatilian who claim to have revealed nefarious schemes of the Mutzachan by reading their minds, Fott who think that the whole idea of the Alliance was junk to begin with, or Orion Rogue's who read too many Armageddon articles about conspiracies and people who died shortly after making a statement to the Dyson sphere or other "suspicious-sounding stuff" (the ever popular "proof" that "there must be something going on").

Strangely, some Jezzadeic and Sye-Men are involved with the Casmem, however only remotely, "hinting" them to some of their targets.

Casmem does not have a certain "style" to express their disdain for Mutzachan. Some cells are nothing more than people who talk in seedy taverns about what should be done about these melonheads, other organize riots or just test the effectiveness of baseball bats versus Mutzachan heads. However, there still exists the intellectual "elite" of Casmem, being composed of "concerned thinkers", politicians or government employees and scientists who have revealed certain things that smelled rotten. These high cader members are a very dangerous lot indeed, working with ARM to develop new Mutzachan-specific viruses or hypnotizing spaceship pilots to steer ships with Mutzachan scientists en route to some congress meeting into an ion storm or the Motaran Rift itself.

Needless to say, the Casmem movement has a very strong fellowship on the planet Dnar, of which huge areas were put in Cataclysm by Lord Markuss in retaliation for the use of nuclear weapons (see Injection module book for details).

Between the two extreme ends of the scale, everything can be found, from concerned reporters trying to reveal some speculated truth to people distributing fliers and magazines reporting Mutzachan conspiracies to Yoga-circles meditating on the future of the universe to cults who pray to the Danes.

At present, Casmem is still too fragmented and disorganized to pose a real threat to the Mutzachan at large, but that is changing as more and more people disappointed by the Alliance and the closed-mouth-politics of the Vision of Eight and other government institutions join the ranks, happy to have found the ones responsible for everything that doesn't work - including their own lives.

Casmem is an illegal terrorist group under Alliance law, membership - which is almost impossible to prove - sentenced as treason, and by death. Of course, news of "normal" people (your neighbor, for instance) being executed just add to the hatred, as most Casmem members are not the terrorists with Omega cannons most people believe terrorists to look like. And, of course: "If the government tries to silence these people, there has to be something to the stuff they talk about"...
