Colonial Reconnaissance Corps: Chapter 3: Players as A-Teams

There are ups and downs to being an A-team for the players.

On the up side, they will have almost any piece of gear they may need, someone above them thinks they might need or that they can convince the higher ups they may need. This goes all the way up to omega cannons, thud guns, Gatling lasers and fully mechanized combat armor equipped with TIES.

They will have comfortable accommodations. Their every wound will be cared for by expert medical personnel. They will have the finest rations made. Expense will be no issue to them. Their eventual paycheck may be a fortune.

There is a down side. The players will be, in many ways, the low men on the totem pole on the PRC cruiser. The scientists may regard them as simple dumb muscle, little better than hired thugs or even disposable robots to carry out their wishes. Some of the ship's support crew may look upon them as heroes but many will avoid getting close to them in light of the high mortality rate A-teams are known for. (Indeed, some call them 'attrition teams'.) A few callous souls might even start up a 'dead pool', betting on which members will not survive. (Smart players might find out who's running the pool and make hefty wagers on themselves surviving.)

Likewise, the players will be assigned all sorts of tasks. They may be asked to collect animal droppings for biologists to study, for example. (Somehow the recruiters never mention that one...)

Whatever task the players are assigned, they are expected to do it. If a scientist wants a tissue sample from a 200 ton, armor plated, reptilian carnivore with teeth 16” long, he expects a tissue sample forthwith. If a geologists has to study a certain area for signs of possible radioactive ore toxins, he does not care if the area is a breeding ground for extremely cunning velociraptors and it happens to be the middle of mating season, he wants that area secured for as long as it takes him to conduct his tests. A seismologists who needs sensors planted in a deep cavern isn't interested in the fact the cavern is filled with giant bats, he wants those sensors planted. How they do it is up to the players.
