These are just a few to help push you in the right direction. Go ahead and add your own.

Equipment

• DO NOT BUY AN OPEN-FACED HELMET
• Grenades are a newbie's best friend, make sure to stock up on some M-85s.
• Never leave home without at least one BRI. Preferably an MBRI.
• Camo Unit is a cheap and very useful Armor Option.
• Get a Rad-Liner - I guarantee without one your BM will expose you to Radiation.
• Corrosive liner is a another must-have armor option.
• Laser damage is reduced by half in smoke, so take some smoke grenades or a Smoke Generator armor option.
• People decry them, wanting to get laser weapons as swiftly as they can, but take a close look at the 'high end' Archaic Powder Weapons. A TK-7A will serve as both an assault rifle and a sniper rifle, and there are pistols in there that can make a Phentari drool with delight. Relatively inexpensive, able to be silenced, and a tech level you can take almost anywhere.
• Keep your old equipment. Always have something for a lower tech level environment.
• Avoid backpack-ammo weapons like the plague. They're heavier than drek.

Starting Skills

Battlelords offers a LOT of skills, hence it is difficult to know which to start with. I suggest you buy some levels of Body Points. This will not only keep you alive in general, but increase the damage you can take before you take a critical (25% of total Body Points is a critical hit).

Our BMs always have Sighting checks frequently, so I also suggest buying a few levels of Sighting skill. And of course you have to take a level or two of Hand-to-Hand, Arachaic Powder Weapon or Laser. These will be the only kinds of weapons you can afford to start with, but also they are the most common weapon types; so when you are caught with nothing you can pick up whatever was left around and use it with some skill.

The Alertness skill is expensive but worth every skill point. In Battlelords Slow = Dead.

Matrix Manipulation is a MUST HAVE skill for matrix users. Given enough levels of the skill (and a successful skill check) nearly anything modification of matrix is possible, making your matrix powers far more flexible, and thus useful.
