Sandwich Run: Chapter 4: Shootout at the O.K. Cafe
From SSDC, Inc.
The party's arrival in Orado is uneventful. It's a sleepy little resort town which caters to wealthy vacationers (mostly from Millersport and other big cities.) If Anne Mycroft is with them, she thanks them for the ride and heads off to get cleaned up before her meeting. The party has no difficulty locating the address on their card. It turns out to be a small deli; a sign over the door reads "The OK Cafe." (BONUS XP: Award the party a bonus of 300xp on top of their final xp award each if they safely deliver Anne Mycroft.)
As the party enters, a nervous looking teenager behind the counter turns to them and stammers "H-hello. C-can I help y...you folks?" He smiles weakly. Have the characters make a Detect Concealment roll at level 2 difficulty. Those that do notice the barrel of a gun protruding from the door leading into the back room.
By a phenomenal stroke of bad timing, the party has arrived just as the deli is in the process of being robbed. The robbers, a Phentari named Coriosarius and a Ram Python named X, are out-of-towners looking to score a little quick cash and get out of town. The bank wasn't open yet, and they lack the skills for a really big heist anyway. Coriosarius concluded that intimidating a deli worker was a fast, easy way to score some cash. Now, things have gotten a bit more complicated, and he doesn't like the odds. Still, he realizes that his best chance is to bluff. When he realizes he's been spotted, the Phentari aims two of his weapons out the door, motioning to X to do the same, and hisses "Hands in the air, all of you...now!" He tries to keep the characters from realizing they outnumber the robbers, ordering them to drop their weapons. If the party complies, X comes out to tie them up, one at a time, while Coriosarius keeps them covered. The two will then take all readily apparent worthwhile belongings from them and leave them tied up until someone else comes in, two hours later.
If a fight breaks out, the robbers will use the cover of the door for as long as possible; this gives those aiming at them a -60% penalty to hit. Other cover is available in the bar, ranging from an overturned chair (-10% to hit) to an overturned table (-30% to hit,) to the bar itself (-50% to hit.) The worker, a hapless sort by the name of Rick, will cower behind the bar and not do much of anything except whimper during the fight.
If the party defeats the would-be bandits, Rick is extremely grateful, and explains to the police that the characters weren't involved in the crime. He also makes them their sandwich. Ask the party exactly what they order...one of them had better have remembered what Mr. Fisk wants! And, sure enough, Rick is just flustered enough that he will forget the pickle unless the party thinks to mention it.
