In "Sandwich Run", the players take the roles of a group of novice mercenaries working for BioCyberdyne, who have just been given their first assignment: travel halfway across the planet, pick up a sandwich from a specific deli, and bring it back to their boss in time for lunch tomorrow. What seems like simply the whim of a powerful corporate executive is actually a bit more, though. The boss, Hamilton Fisk, is engaged in a longstanding, friendly rivalry (well, as friendly as rivalries between two major corporate heads can be) with his counterpart at the Asteroid Mining Consortium, Carl Dansker. Since the two realized long ago that intercompany espionage and intrigue was a costly prospect, they settled on a slightly different way of doing things: every time there's a dispute between the two companies, they settle it with some form of contest.

This time, the dispute is over the rights to a particularly lucrative manufacturing contract with the nearby planet of Gumrana. In order to settle it, they came up with a scenario between them: Fisk would send a team to Orado, a city 500 miles from Millersport, where BioCyberdyne's headquarters is located. They would have eighteen hours to get there, pick up a sandwich from Fisk's favorite deli, and return it to him. Dansker, meanwhile, would send in his own team to try to stop them from succeeding. If the party succeeds at their seemingly inconsequential mission, BioCyberdyne will profit mightily; if not, they'll suffer a sizeable lost opportunity.

In order to keep the contests from becoming simply a matter of who's willing to spend the most money for the best mercenaries, Fisk and Dansk have come up with a few ground rules. Only novice mercs, with no missions to their credit, may be used for these missions. Furthermore, neither company may equip their team with new weapons or armor. Vehicles are permissible, within a certain price range. For this particular contest, the range is 30,000 Credits. Finally, neither team may directly attack the other with lethal force, because that sort of fight brings unwanted attention to the parent corporations from the police.
